Vista launch highlights changed Microsoft atmosphere since '95

Here comes a new Windows operating system from Microsoft Corp. Long delayed, it's the first in several years, so the company plans an enormous marketing campaign to tout the software as a way to get more out of computers.But Microsoft's legion of detractors roll their eyes, calling the new Windows a weak imitator of other operating systems. Meanwhile, technology analysts wonder whether Microsoft's dominance is nearing an end, since programs coming over the Internet are emerging as a more powerful force in computing than software tied to individual desktops.Ah, those were the days. Who can forget the release of Windows 95?That's right: While the description above applies to the new Windows Vista operating system hitting stores Jan. 30, it also was the landscape 11 1/2 years ago, when Microsoft came out with Windows 95 and ended up cementing its position in the PC industry.However, there's one key difference this time: Back in August 1995, people actually lined up outside computer stores to buy the new edition of Windows the moment it went on sale at midnight.Don't expect that to happen for Vista.That doesn't mean Vista will be a dud....

Microsoft, Airtel forge deal to offer services, software

Global IT major Microsoft and Bharti Airtel on Sunday announced a strategic partnership that will offer a range of software and services for small and medium businesses (SMB) in the country. The partnership would offer Microsoft solutions for hosted messaging and collaboration besides other applications like CRM, accounting, ERP, unified communications and select Microsoft ISV applications, a Bharti Airtel release said. It would provide enterprise-class software bundled with connectivity solutions to small businesses that do not have dedicated IT resources. The service is aimed at companies with minimum five or more employees and they would be able to enjoy experience without initial investments using a pay-as-you-go model. The new professional messaging system will give small businesses the ability to access secure enterprise grade e-mail, instant messaging and instant portals with rich collaboration capabilities, it said....

Agile Software Finds Stock Option Errors

Agile Software Corp., which makes product life cycle management software, on Thursday said it needs to restate financial reports dating back to 2000 after an internal investigation uncovered inaccurate accounting for stock options. The company said it has not determined the financial impact of the restatements, but said it could impact income in the periods under review. Agile Software also said Nasdaq will continue to list the company's shares as long it provides an update on the status of its regulatory filings by Jan. 8. At least 94 companies are under scrutiny by the Securities and Exchange Commission or Department of Justice for possible backdating of stock-option grants. At least another 56 companies are conducting or have completed internal stock-option probes. At least 41 senior executives or directors, including 11 CEOs, 9 finance chiefs and 8 general counsels have left at 20 companies due to options accounting irregularities....

Access Accounting prepares for Reverse Charge

Access Accounting has become one of the first software vendors to embrace tax collection changes in the UK and said it will be releasing a Reverse Charge software application within weeks. The vendor claimed the software will be available in time for the Reverse Charge implementation deadline on 1 December, set by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in its fight against VAT fraud. Kevin Misselbrook, customer services director at Access Accounting, told CRN that it has a duty to help end-users comply with the growing burden of regulatory compliance. "VARs will be able to service end-user needs in a responsive fashion and show them that they can also service their needs for Reverse Charge," he said. "This marks a significant opportunity for our channel partners to address the Reverse Charge issue in the market." HMRC originally hoped to implement the Reverse Charge by October....

ILOG Takes Stake in Chinese Software Company

ILOG(R) (Nasdaq: ILOG; Euronext: ILO, ISIN: FR0004042364) and Shanghai Baosight Software Joint Stock Limited Company today announced a strategic business relationship that will enable ILOG to further strengthen its presence in the Chinese market. ILOG will pay CNY 14.4 million ($1.8 million) to acquire 35 percent ownership interest in Shanghai FirstTech Co., Ltd. (FirstTech). Baosight Software will maintain a 41 percent stake in the company, and First Technologies (Cayman), Ltd. Baosight Software's original joint venture partner in FirstTech, will hold 24 percent. Baosight Software is ranked 25th in the China High-Tech 100 listing for 2005, according to China's DigitalTimes magazine. FirstTech Cayman, which specializes in developing and marketing manufacturing and insurance software solutions, has been ILOG's partner for the Chinese market since 2004....

MSC.Software Reports Preliminary Revenue Results for the Third Quarter Ended September 30, 2006

MSC.Software Corporation , the leading global provider of enterprise simulation solutions including simulation software and services, today announced preliminary revenue results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2006. For the third quarter ended September 30, 2006, the Company expects to report revenue in the range of $58 - $60 million compared to revenue of $75.6 million in the third quarter last year, which included $2.6 million of revenue associated with the Company's PLM business which was sold in March 2006 (of the total $2.6 million of PLM revenue, $1.5 million was software revenue and $1.1 million was services), and $7 million in software revenue that resulted from restatement adjustments related to software revenue recognition. The net restatement adjustments arise from software revenue recognized in the third quarter of last year for transactions that occurred prior to January 2005....
