Xbox HD DVD drive to connect to PCs via USB
Posted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 7:15:06 PM by Blog57 Team
While we've got our eye on that new Xbox HD DVD drive that's about to drop next month, one thing we didn't know is that it'll be able to connect to your regular ol' PC via USB -- so that basically means you can get a sweet external HD DVD drive for $200. But here's the catch, Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom isn't including a Windows HD DVD driver so that your PC can actually play those next-gen discs that you're lusting after. But of course, given that its HD DVD player is manufactured by Toshiba, it would appear there's a good chance some enterprising fellow (or software company) will figure out how to make it work pretty quickly. That said, even if someone does get a driver working, there's still that irksome issue of HDCP to get around, assuming your disc requires it for digital output....

Improved DVD burning could spur market boom

A partnership between two San Francisco-area technology companies may help pave the way for people to be able to walk into a store, order a movie and have it burned onto a DVD in 10 minutes. Sonic Solutions and Macrovision Corp. announced this week that they have jointly developed technology that burns DVDs with the same quality as regular DVDs and the same copyright protection that Hollywood studios demand. It marks a critical step toward setting up DVD-burning kiosks in retail stores, something that has been talked about for years. And it could eventually make available thousands of movies that have never been on DVD and allow retailers – both online and in your neighborhood – to sell a wider variety of movies and TV shows. "The traditional way of manufacturing discs, shipping discs and storing them on a shelf inevitably creates the problem of limited inventory," said Chris Cookson, chairman of the DVD Copy Control Association, a group of movie studios and technology companies that manages the making of DVDs....
