After 18 months, 4 seconds of sound to define Windows Vista
Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 11:15:06 PM by Blog57 Team
SEATTLE -- Some musicians spend 18 months working on a whole album. At Microsoft Corp., that is how long it took to perfect just four seconds of sound. Of course, this is not just any four-second clip. It is the sound -- a soft da-dum, da-dumm, with a lush fade-out -- that millions of computer users will hear every day, and perhaps thousands of times in total, when they turn on computers running Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Vista operating system. To set the right tone -- clean, simple, but with "some long-term legs," according to Microsoft's Steve Ball -- the software maker recruited musician Robert Fripp. Mr. Fripp, best known for his work with the '70s rock band King Crimson, recorded hours of his signature layered, guitar-driven sound for the project, under the close direction of Ball and others at Microsoft....

LANState contains a network device status monitor, which allows administrator to see the state of network on a graphic diagram at any time, and obtain notifications on the time devices go out or the time they become available, and thus ensure prompt responding to failures minimizing time loss. LANState generates the network map, which speeds up accessing to remote hosts' resources, and managing those. Employing LANState makes it easier to monitor processes in networks of any ranges or sizes because of the opportunity to link external applications like file managers or remote administration software to the program. The program includes a number of features for obtaining information on remote computers....

Everywhere we look, Video Games and gamers themsleves are being blamed for ultra-violent acts in real life. Many lawmakers fall on either side of the fence on this, and there has been plenty of debate in the gaming industry itself as it wrangles with a Ratings system that works when actually used and paid attention to by parents. But I digress... ....

Domain Technologies announces Synthesizable MRAM8051 ...
Posted Friday, October 13, 2006 1:12:57 PM by Blog57 Team
Plano, Texas , October 12, 2006 - Domain Technologies announces the availability of the industry's first, royalty-free, synthesizable MCS8051 code-compatible microcontroller netlist library and software development kit for use with Actel FPGAs that also includes a royalty-free license to implement resulting microcontroller designs in a Tekmos merged ASIC. Implementing a customized 8051 microcontroller in an FPGA is still relatively expensive for volumes of 10,000 to 100,000 pieces. So one of the unique features of the kit is a royalty-free license to implement MRAM8051 designs in a Tekmos merged ASIC, enabling customers to realize substantial cost savings in low to medium production runs compared to FPGAs. With Tekmos' merged ASIC program, multiple designs are merged onto a single die, thereby spreading the NRE and manufacturing costs between them. In many cases, especially where the combined volumes exceed 10,000 pieces and where a device uses Tekmos standard packaging, the NRE charges may actually be waived, resulting in minimum quantity unit costs as low as $6.00, packaged and tested, and with delivery times as short as eight weeks....
