Microsoft's Zune gives iPod a challenge
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 3:26:05 PM by Blog57 Team
N ext week, Microsoft Corp. will launch the most serious challenge ever mounted to Apple Computer's iPod and iTunes juggernaut in digital music. The software giant is introducing a portable player called the Zune, an online music store called Zune Marketplace and new music software called Zune that links the two. In its first incarnation, the Zune comes in only one version, a big, chunky $249 model that can hold 30 gigabytes of music, videos and photos. I've been testing the Zune for the past couple of weeks and comparing it with the most similar of Apple's six iPod models -- the smaller of the two full-size iPods, which also holds 30 gigabytes and also costs $249. Zune has several nice features the iPod lacks: a larger screen, the ability to exchange songs with other Zunes wirelessly and a built-in FM radio....

Last year, Microsoft, Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) teamed with detectives at Toronto's Child Exploitation Section, acclaimed for its work tracking down child pornographers on the Internet, to create a software program with the purpose of helping hunt down these child pornography Internet traffickers around the world. Yesterday, a man was arrested in Ontario after he showed images of his sexual exploitation of a preschool girl on the Internet. He transmitted the live assault to an undercover detective in Toronto. Police managed to rescue the girl two hours later from a city in southwestern Ontario. The detective, Krawczyk , who witnessed the live assault and wanted to reach the girl at that moment, said, "The message to all pedophiles, and people who want to sexually exploit children on the Internet is that we are on the Internet 24/7, we know where you are and we will find you." Naturally, the police would not disclose any information about what programs they use and how they track the individuals down....

Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:25:08 AM by Blog57 Team
Microsoft Corp. said it has filed more than 50 lawsuits and other legal actions worldwide against people it says sold pirated copies of its software using online auction sites such as eBay. The legal actions announced last week are the latest in a broad effort Microsoft has taken to curb widespread piracy of programs including the Windows operating system and Office suite. The moves come as Microsoft is seeing the market for its software become more saturated, leaving the company eager to add revenue by curbing illegal distribution. Microsoft also is gearing up to release new versions of Windows and Office, which remain Microsoft's biggest cash cows despite the company's many other lines of business. The legal actions were filed over three days last week in the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Korea, Poland and several other countries....

SEATTLE -- Microsoft is preparing to sell software that helps small companies do things such as build a Web site and maintain business contacts, and plans to link the product to its platform for selling online advertising. Microsoft said it will officially release Office Live in the United States Nov. 15, and simultaneously launch test versions of the software in France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. Office Live, which has been available to U.S. companies in test form for more than eight months, is one element of Microsoft's major push to offer more Web-based products so it can compete with companies such as Google and Salesforce.com. Microsoft, which makes most of its money selling desktop-bound software such as the Windows operating system and Office business suite, is feeling increased pressure from companies that offer more advanced or cheaper tools online....

Microsoft posted sales and profit growth at its server and tools business, powered by strong sales of its database software platform, SQL Server, and solid demand for its Windows server software. In after-hours trade, shares of Microsoft dropped slightly to $28.31 shortly after the report from a close of $28.35 on Nasdaq. The stock has risen about 25 percent since June, soaring to a near-two-year high based on investor optimism that much-anticipated upgrades of its Windows operating system and Office software suite will soon pay dividends. For the current quarter, Microsoft forecast diluted earnings per share of between 22 cents and 24 cents on revenue of $11.8 billion to $12.4 billion. The outlook factored in an 11-cent-per-share impact for revenue deferrals....

Microsoft offers software developers virtualization format on open source basis
Posted Monday, October 23, 2006 3:13:42 PM by Blog57 Team
BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Microsoft Corp. said software developers would no longer need to pay or license technology it provides to help one computer run multiple operating systems at the same time. It said it would provide access to a "virtualization" format on an open-source basis, saying this was the best way to get the broadest audience for its own specifications. The technology makes it easier for users to access programs or look at documents made by non-Microsoft vendors. Demand from customers -- particularly in the government sector -- who use open-source servers such as Linux was one of the main reasons for the company to move toward open-source standards, said Microsoft spokesman Tom Brookes. He said it was not connected to Microsoft's rows with EU regulators over supplying interoperability information to rivals....
